Chapter 10:

In what ways does this chapter develop the characters and their relationships with each other?

This chapter shows the characters develop their relationships with each other in many ways. Firstly, Ryan says thank you to Jake which is a big deal because he has been very tough on him most of the day and not taking him seriously. For Ryan to show that he appreciated him in that moment deepened their relationship as Ryan is starting to warm to Jake and respect him. This develops Ryan's character as well because we haven't seen him being thankful yet or show a softer side as he has mostly shouted at Jake or his son. They then exchange a joke and smile at one another which solidifies the fact hat they are gaining respect for one another. Even thought you see the sirens in the background which shows they have gone through a stressful situation, they still have time to exchange thank yous and joke around which also adds normality to the characters of Jake and Ryan.

You also see Jake being welcomes back to the office by another friendly officer and tells him that he will get used to it and tells him he did well. This shows Jake, despite being a joke around the station for getting the job because of his father, being slightly welcomed into their community and making friends. This idea of him being accepted is again solidified when Ryan asks Jake if he wanted to train with him and the others that night. At the end of the chapter, we see Jake being given a card by his possible love interest: Simon. This deepens their relation because at first they would smile at each other but now I think they will become more serious.

This chapter also develops the idea of the police being normal people at heart. We see jokes being made and bonds forming. After the man who takes his daughter tried to take him own life and an officer saves him, he just walks away into the evening. This tells me that he walks back to normal life and people can alienate the police but he is showing he just walks back home like nothing really happened.

  1. Mark 10/10 Really excellent work!
Tabi's question: Chapter 10 In what ways does this chapter develop the characters and their relationships with each other?
1 good point about Ryan recognising that Jake is capable and that he needs encouragement
1 good point about Jake becoming more accepted by the rest of the police team who were very quick to assume that he would not be capable of anything as he'd only been promoted because of his father being Chief Super.
1 good point about the chapter showing the police as normal people, in their private lives, with friends, family, duties and worries.
