1. women are underrepresented. This is because of the previous patriarchal social and cultural attitudes. In two of the observers we see a large advert for women's lingerie. This shows women as objects and would only like to read this advert instead of the hard news. Women were meant to be fragile and so by reading all the real news wasn't seen as proper.  By seeing these large adverts it makes me think that women then were only good for one thing and that was pleasing their husbands. 

The Queen is also pictured not as a woman but only as the head of state. 

Jackie: 'We're very happy' she is trying to defend herself because she re-married. This shows women as being defined by their relationship to men. Instead of being one of the headlines for being a good person, she is trying to stop people attacking her husband choice while people assume the worst about her. 

Barbra castle is the only female politician pictures in all of the three observers. She is trying to argue for less unequal pay in a tiny space in the corner again making it feel like women were less important. Very few women were politicians and this reflects the patriarchal views that were given back then. There were next to none representations of female politicians which shows that women weren't thought of as people in power. 

There is also a women and man pictured getting married on one of the front covers .As interracial marriages were so rare and unheard of, there people made the front page. I think this reflects the social/cultural context as this normal occurrence was newsworthy. That normal people getting married should make the front covers only because of their race is 

'Briton shoots for gold' story also reflects social and cultural context as it talks about 'black power' Even thought there are moments of equality there are still racist words used showing that equality had not been fully reached. There are words used which would not be said or published today showing how much times have changed since then. However there is representation of other races and movements which back then would have been seen as a positive step in the right direction. Although it shows that even liberals were unaware then as we are in a more multicultural society today. 

'Lawyers will urge divorce by consent' Women had to give proof for divorce and so if their husband was cheating on them and they had no proof they could not get divorced. This will make it much easier to get a divorce and will potentially move to a greater gender equality.

mise-en-scene

- where sk8 boi takes place as well as teenage dirtbag

teen dirt- classic, traditional typical American highschool. clear hierarchy and roles- football jocks marching in matching expensive uniform. main guy with weird clothes who doesn't belong but want to. setting is where performance and story take place. we see the band actually play and at the end we see the story and the band merge together as they play at the prom. shows who has power and wants to belong. colours of deeply saturated colours- shows American dream- colours of American sit-coms, bright, strong. jocks arrive in nice car, main guy arrives in bike which gets run over. promotes the artist:                  traditional way in in delivering the music video in that the band and artist and lyrics of the story are in show.

MUSIC MAGAZINES: MEDIA LANGUAGE
Look carefully at the front covers of MOJO and RNR magazines. 
QUESTION: How far do MOJO and RNR use different media language to create different connotations? (CONNOTATION meaning: an idea or quality that a word makes you think about in addition to its meaning.)
Answer on your blog. This is a high-value question and should take all lesson to answer. You can use the class blog search engine for more examples of how to analyse music magazines.
In your answer you should have 2 paragraphs:

• analyse the media language in MOJO and RNR magazine. 'Media language' includes the placement of the main image, the type of photography, lighting, colours, fonts, how busy or restrained the cover is, the layout (such as alignment to the margins), how serious or playful 

• make judgements and draw conclusions about how far the media language is used differently in both extracts to create different connotations. Are there similarities in both covers? What sorts of audiences are they targeting? You could think about MOJO's rock aesthetic of living loud and dangerously compared to RNR's folk, rock, blues vibe.

RnR:  

comes across more calm, professional, meeting your eye confidently, warm colours

yoga: peace, tranquil, meditation, relaxation, inner-strength

camomile tea: relaxed, take before bed, warming, comforting

three Our Fathers: beginning of lords prayer- 

suggests his lifestyle is more retired, slow, quiet, meaningful, spiritual 

MOJO's cover is quite cluttered and busy because of its numerous cover lines, images and puffs as well as a very dynamic cover mount in neon colours with a vibrant cartoon image. 

RnR also has many coverlines but they are more minimalistic and justified to the RH margin. They are exclusively in white creating a calm, orderly, uncluttered organised quality. Equally the cover mount with its modest verbal play unheard is very plain and streamlines. 

Although both magazines feature a star as the centre of visual interest and both magazines celebrate that star, MOJO does so in a more dynamic, aggressive, confrontational way compared to RnR's gentle, low-key, folksy vibe. This is because MOJO targets a primarily rock audience while RnR is aimed at folk and blues audiences. 

Although both music magazines feature many articles which is typical of music magazines, RnR is more orderly and restrained. 

MOJO's choice of colours is vibrant, electric and dynamic. Particularly in the primary colours of the cover mount with its playful skeleton. By contrast, RnR uses soft, dull browns and only red as an accent colour.
